Getting 10 coins in the first lap so that you have two full laps of top speed is a great way to keep an early lead. The second reason only applies to your first 10 coins: each coin you pick up increases the top speed of your kart. This applies even to coins you get while already having the maximum of 10. The first reason coins are important is the small instantaneous speed boost that every coin you collect gives you.
